Station Master's Office

During the high point of the rail years, The Station Master, of Depot Agent as the Master was commonly called, ran the operations of the Depot from an office located in the center of the enclosed sections of the building.  Tickets to board the train were sold to would-be passengers from small windows that opened to waiting rooms.  Clerks, along with an employee who would handle Western Union services, also had desk in the Station Master's office.

One end of the Station Master's office extends far enough beyond the rest of the building that a worker sitting at the telegraph machine or railroad telephone could see a distance down the railroad tracks and watch for incoming trains while continuing to stay on task.  It has been said that experienced Station Masters and Clerks could hear the telegraph machine begin to chatter even when standing across the room.  They could translate the message contained in the dots and dashes accurately without typing anything or writing the message down.

Today, the Station Master's section of the Depot is used by the Wallace Depot Commission and the Wallace Chamber of Commerce as an office and reeption area.
