BOX CAR

The Wallace Depot Commission acquired a boxcar to add to their collection of rolling museum pieces in 2015.  It was purchased from CSX in Jacksonville, Florida and was delivered by them to Wallace.

"Boxcar" is a term used for a railroad car that is closed in and generally used to carry freight.  The car can haul most loads and is considered extremely versatile with large sliding doors which allow the capability to haul oversized items.

One interesting sidenote:

Through the years Hobos have often used boxcars to get from place to place (freighthopping).  Because the car was enclosed the Hobo could not be seen by railroad police.  The car offered warmth since it was somewhat insulated from cold weather.

Visitors to the Wallace Depot should be sure to tour the boxcar exhibit.  There will be a surprise awaiting you!
